Device management

The Kuno app lets you manage your Kuno recording device in one place: pair, rename, update firmware, check the battery, and disconnect when needed. This article walks you through every step.

At a glance

  • Pairing happens over Bluetooth using the pairing button on the device; the app walks you through setup.
  • You can check battery level, connection status, and firmware version anytime under Settings, My Device.
  • Firmware updates are installed via the app in an encrypted, EU-compliant way, without recordings ever leaving the device.
  • The red recording LED visibly signals every active recording - a deliberate transparency feature for legally compliant recording.
  • When you unpair, recordings already synced stay safely in the app on EU servers.
  • You can manage multiple devices, but only one paired Kuno is ever active at a time.

Your Kuno device and the Kuno app work as one unit. Under Settings › My Device, you can manage everything related to the hardware, from initial pairing to battery level.

Pairing your device

  1. Open the Kuno app and turn on Bluetooth on your phone.
  2. Turn on the Kuno device and hold the pairing button until the LED blinks blue.
  3. In the app, tap Add device and select your Kuno from the list.
  4. Confirm the pairing. The LED lights up solid briefly once the connection is established.

After that, the device connects automatically in the background whenever it’s in range and powered on.

Checking status and battery

Under My Device, you can see connection status, battery percentage, and the installed firmware version at a glance. Recordings are automatically transferred to the app in encrypted form after each session and processed exclusively on EU servers.

Understanding the LED

  • Blinking blue: pairing mode
  • Solid red: recording in progress
  • Pulsing green: battery charging

The red recording LED is deliberately easy to see. In Germany, private conversations are protected under Section 201 of the German Criminal Code (StGB): get everyone’s consent before you start recording. The LED helps you work transparently and stay within the law.

Renaming your device

  1. Open My Device and tap the device name.
  2. Enter a new name, e.g. “Kuno Office.”
  3. Save. The name will appear in the device list going forward.

Updating firmware

The app checks for updates regularly. If a new version is available, you’ll get a notification.

  1. Tap Update firmware.
  2. Keep the device nearby and charged during the process.
  3. Wait until the app confirms it’s finished.

Updates are transmitted encrypted. Your recordings never leave the device during this process, and your data is never used to train AI models.

Unpairing your device

  1. Open My Device and tap Remove device.
  2. Confirm the action.

Recordings already synced stay safely in the app. You can re-pair the same device at any time.

Multiple devices

You can save multiple Kuno devices in the app, but only one can be actively connected at a time. Simply switch the active device under My Device.
