Retention & deletion
You stay in full control of how long your recordings and transcripts are stored by Kuno. This article explains what retention periods you can set, exactly what happens when you delete something, and what rights you have under the GDPR.
At a glance
- Retention periods are freely selectable: from 24 hours to 24 months, or kept indefinitely, and changeable anytime in the Kuno app.
- Audio data and transcripts are processed and stored exclusively on EU servers (Frankfurt).
- A recording is only created when you deliberately start it on the Kuno device and the red LED lights up; no data is captured without an active recording.
- Manually deleting individual recordings is immediate and permanent; deleted content cannot be recovered.
- We fully honor your GDPR right to erasure (Article 17), including backups, within 30 days.

With Kuno, you decide how long your voice recordings and the transcripts generated from them are stored. All data is processed exclusively in the EU (Frankfurt data center) and never transferred to servers outside the EU.
Setting retention periods
By default, Kuno keeps your recordings and transcripts until you delete them. You can instead turn on automatic deletion:
- Open the Kuno app and tap Settings.
- Select Privacy and then Retention.
- Choose a period: 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, 6 months, 12 months, 24 months, or keep indefinitely.
The period runs from the end of each recording. Older recordings are then automatically and irrevocably removed. You can change this setting at any time; a shorter period takes effect immediately on existing recordings.
Deleting individual recordings
- Open the recording you want to remove in the Kuno app.
- Tap the menu and select Delete.
- Confirm the action.
Deleting removes both the audio file and the associated transcript.
Note: Deletion is permanent. We cannot technically recover deleted recordings and transcripts, not even through support.
What gets removed on deletion
The audio recording, the transcript, and any summaries generated from it are all deleted. The data is removed from your active account immediately and, within 30 days, also from our encrypted backups.
Your rights under the GDPR
As a user in the EU, you have the right to erasure of your personal data (Article 17 GDPR). If you’d like to delete your entire Kuno account along with all recordings, or request a copy of your data (Articles 15, 20 GDPR), write to [email protected]. We process your request promptly, and no later than within 30 days.
Keep consent in mind: Recordings are only created when you deliberately start one on the Kuno device and the red recording LED lights up. Please remember that recording confidential conversations in Germany requires the consent of everyone taking part, under Section 201 of the German Criminal Code (StGB). If in doubt, delete an accidental recording immediately.
