Kuno is built from the ground up for European privacy standards: your recordings and transcripts are processed and stored exclusively in the EU. This article explains how Kuno complies with the GDPR, what the consent requirement under Section 201 of the German Criminal Code (StGB) means for you, and what rights you have.

At Kuno, privacy isn’t an add-on feature — it’s the foundation. The Kuno device and the Kuno app are built so that your conversations stay under your control, in compliance with European and German law.
Where is my data processed?
Exclusively in the EU. Recordings, transcripts, and summaries are processed and stored in data centers within the European Union (located in Germany/EU). There is no transfer to the US. That means your data is fully subject to the GDPR and European data sovereignty.
How are my recordings protected?
- All data is encrypted in transit (the Bluetooth connection between device and app, as well as app-to-server transfers) and at rest.
- Recordings are private by default and visible only to your account. Nothing is shared unless you actively share it.
- Kuno never uses your recordings or transcripts to train AI models.
What do I need to know legally about recording?
In Germany, non-public spoken conversations are protected under Section 201 of the German Criminal Code (StGB). You may only record a conversation if everyone involved has agreed.
Important: Secret recordings are a criminal offense. Obtain the consent of everyone you’re speaking with before every recording. The visible red recording LED on the Kuno device signals an ongoing recording to everyone present — use it as a transparent signal, but don’t let it replace explicit consent.
What rights do I have under the GDPR?
You remain fully in control at all times. Here’s how to exercise your data subject rights:
- In the Kuno app, open Settings → Privacy.
- Select Export data to receive a copy of your recordings and transcripts (right to data portability).
- Select Delete recording or Delete account to permanently remove data (right to erasure).
- For access requests or questions about processing, write to [email protected].
Deleted recordings are permanently removed. Unlike many US-based services, Kuno doesn’t store transcripts indefinitely — you decide what stays.
Warranty and right of withdrawal
The Kuno device carries a 2-year statutory warranty. For online purchases, you also have a 14-day right of withdrawal, no reason required.
