Where Does a Google Meet Recording Go?
Find a Google Meet recording in Drive, email or Calendar, understand ownership and access, and troubleshoot processing, permissions and missing files.
On this page +
Google Meet recordings normally go to the meeting organizer’s Google Drive, inside My Drive > Meet Recordings. Google also emails a link to the organizer and the person who started recording; for a scheduled meeting, the link can appear in the Google Calendar event.
Find the recording in Google Drive
- Sign in to the organizer’s Google account.
- Open Google Drive.
- Select My Drive.
- Open Meet Recordings.
- Sort by modified date or search for the meeting name.
Google’s official Meet recording guide is authoritative for storage, access and special ownership cases. Do not assume that the person who clicked Record owns the file.
Check email and Calendar
Search the organizer’s email for the recording notification. Google states that the organizer and recording initiator receive the link. If recording began at the scheduled meeting time, open the Calendar event and look for the recording attachment.
| Location | Who should check | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Drive > Meet Recordings | Organizer or file owner | Original recording file |
| Organizer and recorder | Direct link and notification | |
| Calendar event | Eligible invitees | Attached recording link |
Understand ownership and access
Ownership can vary for meetings created through Calendar, Classroom or another person’s account. Shared access is not the same as ownership. Open the file details in Drive to identify the owner and current permissions.
Before sharing externally, check whether the recording contains personal data, screens or confidential discussion. Limit access to people who need it and apply the organization’s retention policy.
For the complete capture process, see Google Meet recording and Google Meet transcription.
Troubleshoot a missing recording
Check in this order:
- Confirm that recording actually started and participants saw the notification.
- Wait for processing to finish; Drive may show that the video is still processing.
- Check the organizer’s account, not only the recorder’s account.
- Search email and the scheduled Calendar event.
- Review Drive trash and sharing notifications.
- Ask the Workspace administrator to confirm recording eligibility and investigate logs.
If no recording was created, a transcript or notes cannot restore missing audio. For future critical calls, test eligibility and storage before the meeting with a Google Meet test call workflow.
Download, move or share it
Google documents playback, sharing and download options from Drive and the emailed link. Downloading creates another copy that must also be governed. Moving the file can break colleagues’ expectations, so prefer clear naming and controlled sharing over ad hoc duplication.
Record the meeting date, organizer, purpose, retention date and authorized audience. If a transcript or summary is produced, link it back to the original file for verification.
In-person meetings are different
Native Meet recording handles the online meeting feed; it is not dedicated room capture. Kuno is a privacy-first physical AI voice recorder made in Germany for consented in-person meetings. Audio capture happens on-device; processing and storage are EU-hosted where described in Kuno’s service. It combines hardware with a monthly or annual AI plan.

A simple recording-handling checklist
- announce and obtain required permission;
- name the recording consistently;
- verify the owner;
- restrict sharing;
- review transcript and summary details;
- record a deletion date;
- avoid unnecessary downloads;
- test export before account closure.
