Google Meet Test Call: Check Your Camera, Mic and Audio

To run a Google Meet test call, open the meeting link and use the pre-join preview. Select the intended camera, microphone and speaker; speak and watch the microphone level; play the speaker test; and confirm your video appears correctly. For a presentation, join a private meeting alone and test screen sharing too.

Google Meet does not require a special dial-in “test number.” Its green-room preview is the official self-check.

Run the pre-join Google Meet test

Google’s official audio and video connection guide gives this workflow:

1. On a computer, open Google Meet and select the meeting.
2. In the preview, inspect the camera image.
3. Open the device controls or More options → Settings.
4. Select the exact microphone, speaker and camera you will use.
5. Speak. If the microphone bar moves, Meet receives input.
6. Choose Test speakers and listen for the sound.
7. Join only when the preview and audio checks pass.

Do this with the same dock, monitor, headset and browser profile you will use in the real meeting. Plugging in a new device later can change the selected input.

A complete five-minute test call

The pre-join check confirms basic device access. For an interview, webinar or customer call, create a meeting and join alone to test the whole workflow.

Ask a colleague to join if you must evaluate actual voice quality. A moving meter does not reveal echo, room reverberation or aggressive noise suppression.

Fix a microphone that does not work

Google’s Meet audio troubleshooting guide recommends checking Companion mode, selecting the correct device and granting access at site, browser and operating-system levels.

Work from the narrowest setting outward:

1. Make sure the microphone is not muted physically or in Meet.
2. Select the correct microphone in Meet settings.
3. In the browser address bar, allow meet.google.com to use the microphone.
4. Check operating-system privacy settings for the browser.
5. Disconnect Bluetooth devices and retest the built-in microphone.
6. Close other recording or conferencing apps.
7. Restart the browser; in Chrome, Google documents chrome://restart as a troubleshooting step.
8. Restart the computer if the device is still unavailable.

Avoid selecting a monitor microphone accidentally. The name can look similar to a webcam or dock.

Fix camera problems

If the preview is black, frozen or shows the wrong camera:

• uncover any physical privacy shutter;
• select the correct camera in Meet settings;
• allow camera access for Meet, the browser and the operating system;
• close Camera, Zoom, Teams and other apps using the device;
• unplug and reconnect the webcam;
• test the camera in the operating system’s camera app;
• update the browser and camera firmware where available.

Google’s official camera troubleshooting page specifically recommends checking connection, selecting the correct camera, closing other apps, testing another app and updating the browser.

Prevent echo and poor sound

Echo usually occurs when one device’s microphone hears another device’s speakers. Google recommends headphones, lower speaker volume and muting when not speaking in its quality troubleshooting guidance.

For better audio:

• use one microphone and one speaker path in the room;
• mute secondary laptops or join them without audio;
• use headphones for individual calls;
• keep the microphone close and away from keyboards;
• avoid pairing a laptop microphone with distant monitor speakers;
• use Ethernet or strong Wi-Fi when possible;
• turn off video temporarily if the network is severely constrained.

Test recording and transcription separately

A successful camera and microphone test does not confirm that your account can record or transcribe. Those features depend on Google Workspace edition, administrator settings, meeting role and device. Google’s Meet recording documentation lists supported editions and explains where recordings are saved.

Test checklist for presenters

Thirty minutes before the meeting:

• restart the browser and close heavy applications;
• connect power and the intended network;
• open slides and every link you will share;
• disable private notifications;
• test screen sharing and tab audio;
• confirm co-host and presentation permissions;
• place backup files somewhere accessible;
• verify the meeting recording or transcript entitlement if required.

Confirm the right camera, microphone and speaker are selected; the microphone level moves; the speaker test is audible; the camera is framed; and sharing reveals only intended content. Then join a minute early. The small buffer is more useful than troubleshooting while everyone waits.
