A trailer pre trip inspection checklist helps a competent operator examine the connected towing system, trailer condition and load before departure. It creates a repeatable record for observations, defects, ownership and release decisions without replacing physical inspection or qualified judgment.

This checklist is not authorization or proof that a trailer is safe, roadworthy or compliant. Qualified owners must apply applicable law, operator policy, manufacturer instructions, load-specific requirements, site controls and professional judgment. Stop and escalate any condition outside the inspector’s competence or authority.

Confirm trailer, vehicle and trip identity

Record the towing vehicle, trailer, operator, date, time, location and planned duty. Verify identifiers against dispatch and registration records. Confirm that the selected trailer and towing vehicle combination is approved for the intended use under the organization’s process.

Review the planned route, load type, mass information supplied through the controlled process, dimensions, environmental conditions and known restrictions. Do not estimate ratings from appearance. Use manufacturer plates, approved documents and qualified fleet guidance to verify compatibility, capacities and configuration.

Consider route-specific exposure such as low clearances, steep grades, restricted sites, ferry or rail loading, high winds and surfaces unsuitable for the combination. Dispatch and qualified operational owners decide whether the route and timing are acceptable. Record changed assumptions and the person who reassessed them. A pre-trip check performed for one load or route should not be reused after the trailer, cargo, towing vehicle or journey conditions change.

Check that required inspection, maintenance and defect records are current and that unresolved restrictions are visible. A previous completed checklist does not establish present condition after loading, parking, maintenance or another driver’s use.

Prepare a controlled inspection

Inspect in a suitable location under the site’s traffic and safety arrangements. Control vehicle movement according to the approved procedure. Wear required protective equipment and use safe access methods. The checklist does not prescribe wheel chocking, isolation or work beneath equipment; follow qualified instructions for the specific vehicle and site.

Have adequate lighting and the authorized documents available. Remove distractions and follow a consistent walk-around sequence so components are less likely to be skipped. Do not reach into pinch points, touch hot components or enter an unsafe area to complete a box.

Record direct observations separately from diagnosis. “Air line visibly abraded near connection” is useful evidence; “will fail today” is an unsupported prediction unless a qualified person determines it.

Adapt component names and functional checks to the exact equipment. Never use the generic template to improvise a test that conflicts with manufacturer or operator procedures.

Inspect coupling and safety connections

Use the manufacturer and operator procedure for the specific hitch, fifth wheel, drawbar, kingpin, coupling head or other connection. Check visible condition, correct engagement, locking indication and required retaining devices. Confirm the towing attachment itself shows no obvious damage, looseness or unauthorized modification.

Inspect safety chains, cables and breakaway connections for correct attachment, routing, condition and freedom from dragging or binding. Check electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic connections as applicable. They should be secured, correctly routed and free from visible damage, contamination or tension that movement could worsen.

After connection and any authorized functional checks, complete another full walk-around. Confirm landing equipment, wheel chocks, dock devices, steps, hoses, tools and loading equipment are in their required travel state and nothing remains attached to the trailer or ground. Check that coupling activity has not changed load access, door security or clearance. Where another person assisted, use a positive handover rather than assuming departure readiness from a gesture.

Do not place fingers in coupling mechanisms or stand between moving units. If engagement cannot be verified through the approved method, prevent departure and escalate. A tug, indicator or visual check only has meaning within the equipment-specific procedure.

Check tires, wheels and running gear

Inspect every accessible tire for visible damage, embedded objects, abnormal wear, deformation and condition inconsistent with approved limits. Verify pressure using the approved method and specification when required. Do not use appearance alone to judge pressure or serviceability.

Check wheels, rims, hubs and visible fasteners for damage, looseness indicators, leaks, missing parts or abnormal heat signs. Keep clear of hot components and pressurized tire hazards. Qualified maintenance personnel must assess suspected wheel, bearing, suspension or axle defects.

Review mudguards, suspension components and underbody items from a safe position. Never crawl beneath a trailer or enter a danger zone without the applicable isolation, support and work procedure. Walk around the trailer and inspect frame members, body panels, floor where safely visible, landing gear, supports, doors, hinges, locks, ramps, gates, tarps and guards applicable to the design. Look for cracks, distortion, corrosion, impact damage, loose components, leaks and evidence of shifting.

Confirm doors, hatches, ramps and removable equipment are secured by the approved means. Check that landing gear and supports are in the required travel state. Do not force a damaged latch or use an improvised restraint without qualified authorization.

For refrigerated, tipper, tanker, livestock or specialist trailers, add the manufacturer’s operational checks and competence requirements. A generic road trailer list cannot cover pressure systems, hydraulics, temperature control or product-specific containment.

Confirm ancillary equipment is secured and configured through its own approved procedure. Examples may include spare wheels, ramps, tail lifts, hoses, bins, refrigeration units and powered accessories. Check visible guards, transport locks, controls and warning indicators without operating unfamiliar equipment. Leaks, unusual noises, damaged locks or unexplained alarms require qualified assessment. Verify load distribution and security

Confirm load identity, declared mass, placement and compatibility with the trailer and route through approved documentation and calculation methods. Qualified loading owners must apply applicable limits and procedures. A balanced-looking load may still exceed a rating or create an unsafe axle distribution.

Inspect anchor points, restraints, blocking, bracing, containment, doors and coverings according to load-specific instructions. Check for damaged equipment, insufficient protection at edges, looseness or a route through which cargo could shift or escape. Do not enter or open a load space when movement, pressure or falling material could create danger.

Record defects and control release
