Talk to Text Not Working on iPhone? Fix It Step by Step
Fix iPhone talk-to-text problems by checking Dictation, language, microphone access, connectivity, restrictions and iOS before resetting broader settings.
On this page +
If talk to text is not working on your iPhone, first confirm that Enable Dictation is on under Settings → General → Keyboard. Then test the microphone in Voice Memos, select the correct keyboard language, check restrictions and restart the iPhone. Leave resets until last.
Apple calls the feature Dictation, even though people often search for talk to text, speech to text or voice typing. The microphone on the keyboard is separate from recording a memo and from Siri.
Quick fix in two minutes
Work through these steps in order:
- Open Settings → General → Keyboard.
- Turn Enable Dictation off, wait a few seconds, then turn it on again.
- Open Notes and tap in a new note.
- Switch to the keyboard language you intend to speak.
- Tap the Dictation microphone and say one short sentence.
- If nothing happens, record the same sentence in Voice Memos.
- Restart the iPhone and test Notes again.
Apple’s official iPhone Dictation guide confirms the Enable Dictation path and notes that availability and features vary by language and region.
Diagnose the symptom first
| Symptom | Most likely area | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone icon missing | Dictation disabled or restricted | General → Keyboard → Enable Dictation |
| Icon appears but no text | Microphone, language or service issue | Voice Memos test and keyboard language |
| Wrong language | Active keyboard mismatch | Globe key and Dictation language |
| Stops immediately | Noise, connection or software problem | Quiet test, restart, iOS update |
| Works in Notes, not one app | App-specific problem | App update and permissions |
| Words are inaccurate | Audio quality or vocabulary | Clean microphone and correct language |
Testing in Apple Notes matters because it separates a system-wide failure from a problem in one third-party app.
Check Dictation and keyboard language
Open Settings → General → Keyboard and verify Enable Dictation. If several keyboards are installed, the active keyboard influences the spoken language. In a text field, use the globe key to switch before dictating.
Apple notes that Dictation may not be available in every language, country or region. Check Apple’s current iOS feature availability rather than assuming a language supported on one device is supported identically everywhere.
If the keyboard microphone disappeared after a workplace configuration change, the device may be managed. Ask the organisation’s administrator whether Siri or Dictation is restricted instead of repeatedly resetting the phone.
Test the microphones
Open Voice Memos and record ten seconds. Speak normally, then play it back through headphones.
- If the recording is silent or heavily muffled, remove the case and clear debris from microphone openings without inserting sharp objects.
- Disconnect Bluetooth headphones and retest; the iPhone may be listening to a distant headset microphone.
- Test a normal phone call and a speakerphone call because iPhones use different microphones in different situations.
- If only one app fails, update or reinstall that app after protecting its data.
Apple’s microphone troubleshooting page recommends removing cases or screen protectors that block openings, clearing debris and testing with Voice Memos and Camera.
For recorded notes rather than live Dictation, see this voice-notes workflow and Apple Voice Memo transcription guidance.
Check connectivity, privacy and restrictions
Apple says Dictation requests are processed on-device in many languages and may work without an internet connection. However, availability differs, and dictated text in a search box may be sent to the search provider. If the problem affects only one language, test a stable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection and another supported language.
Also check:
- Screen Time: content and privacy restrictions can affect Siri and Dictation.
- Low Data Mode or network filtering: workplace networks may block required services.
- VPN or security software: temporarily test on a different trusted network.
- Bluetooth routing: disconnect accessories to force use of the phone microphone.
- App permissions: a third-party voice app may need microphone access under Privacy & Security.
Do not disable organisational security controls without authorisation. A short test on a personal network is enough to identify network involvement.
Update and restart before resetting
Install the latest iOS version offered for the device under Settings → General → Software Update, then restart. Updates can repair speech, keyboard and app compatibility issues.
If the problem started after adding a keyboard, remove that keyboard temporarily. Third-party keyboards may expose different controls from Apple’s keyboard.
Only after backups and simpler tests should you consider Reset All Settings. Apple’s reset guide explains the current reset menu and what different options do. Do not select Erase All Content and Settings for a Dictation problem.
When Dictation works but the text is poor
Improve the input rather than repeating the same sentence louder:
- select the exact keyboard language;
- speak in phrases with natural pauses;
- hold the phone at a normal conversational distance;
- move away from fans, traffic and echoing rooms;
- spell uncommon names after saying them;
- manually review dates, amounts and technical terms;
- use punctuation commands supported for the selected language.
Dictation is designed for one person composing text. It is not the same as transcribing a multi-speaker meeting. For recorded conversations, use a meeting transcription workflow and obtain consent.
When to use a separate recorder
If the real need is recurring in-person meetings rather than typing messages, fixing the keyboard microphone solves the wrong problem. A dedicated device can offer consistent placement, separate storage and a clearer recording state.
Kuno is a privacy-first physical AI voice recorder made in Germany. It captures audio on-device, with EU-hosted processing and storage where described by Kuno’s service. It is hardware plus a monthly or annual AI plan.
Explore Kuno for consented meeting capture if you need a professional recording workflow rather than keyboard Dictation.
Final checklist
- Enable Dictation is on.
- The correct keyboard language is active.
- Dictation works or fails in Apple Notes.
- Voice Memos records clear sound.
- Bluetooth accessories are disconnected for testing.
- Restrictions and device management are understood.
- A trusted network has been tested.
- iOS and the affected app are current.
- Restart has been completed.
- Reset is reserved for the final step.
If Voice Memos is also silent after case removal and restart, contact Apple Support or an authorised service provider; the issue may be hardware rather than speech recognition.
