How to Enable Voice Typing on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone

To enable voice typing, first place the cursor in an editable text field, confirm microphone access and choose the correct language. Then use the platform shortcut: Windows + H on Windows, the Dictation shortcut or microphone key on Mac, and the keyboard microphone on Android or iPhone.

Enable voice typing on Windows

Microsoft’s voice typing guide says Windows 10 and 11 users can place the cursor in a text box and press Windows key + H. You can also tap the microphone on the touch keyboard.

Wait for the listening indicator before speaking. Microsoft says this voice-typing feature uses online speech recognition and requires internet access. Change the input language with Windows key + Spacebar. This is distinct from Windows 11 Voice Access, which can control the computer and has different offline capabilities.

If the microphone is blocked, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and allow access for the relevant apps. Then check Settings > System > Sound > Input to select and test the intended microphone.

Windows may hear a laptop microphone when you intended to use a headset. Watch the input meter while speaking and disconnect unused devices during diagnosis. If voice typing opens but reports an unsupported language, install or select a language listed in Microsoft’s current support page rather than assuming the display language controls recognition.

Enable Dictation on Mac

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard, find Dictation and turn it on. In an app, place the insertion point, then press the microphone function key, use the configured shortcut or choose Edit > Start Dictation.

Apple’s current Mac Dictation instructions note that availability varies by language and region. The text beneath Dictation settings indicates whether general dictation inputs are processed on-device for that configuration or require a network path. When Voice Control is enabled, it handles dictation instead of standard macOS Dictation.

Enable voice typing on Android

On Gboard, open an app such as Gmail or Keep, tap an editable field and tap the microphone at the top of the keyboard. Google’s official Gboard instructions say talk-to-text does not support every language and some steps require Android 7.0 or later.

If the microphone is missing, confirm the default keyboard, microphone permission, voice service and navigation-bar keyboard button. Work profiles and device-management policies may disable cloud speech services.

Enable Dictation on iPhone or iPad

Open Settings > General > Keyboard and turn on Enable Dictation. Tap an editable text field, then tap the Dictate button on the onscreen keyboard and begin speaking.

Apple’s iPhone Dictation guide says many languages process dictation requests on-device without an internet connection, while search-box text may be sent to the search provider. Availability and features vary by language, country and region.

Dictation behavior can change when a hardware keyboard is connected. Apple documents configurable shortcuts for that case. If the onscreen microphone is absent, first confirm Enable Dictation remains on, then test in Apple’s Notes app to separate a system problem from an app-specific text field.

Turn on voice typing in Google Docs

In a document opened in a current supported Chrome, Edge or Safari browser, choose Tools > Voice typing, select the language, click the microphone and speak. Google’s Docs voice-typing documentation says the browser controls the speech-to-text service and sends the resulting text to Docs or Slides.

Allow microphone access in both the operating system and browser. If the menu is absent in a managed account, an administrator may have disabled it. Google documents voice editing commands only for English account and document language combinations; punctuation support also varies.

Voice typing in a browser adds a third permission layer: the site itself. Select the lock or site-controls icon near the address bar, inspect microphone permission and reload after changing it. Confirm the correct microphone in browser settings when several inputs are attached.

Fix voice typing that will not start

Use this order to isolate the problem:

1. Test the microphone in the operating system.
2. Select the correct input device and raise its input level.
3. Grant microphone access to the system, browser and app.
4. Put the cursor in a genuine editable field.
5. Select a supported voice-input language.
6. Connect to the internet when the feature requires it.
7. Close applications that may hold exclusive microphone access.
8. Check administrator, parental-control or work-profile restrictions.
