A scaffolding inspection checklist creates a traceable assessment of a scaffold’s condition, configuration and intended use. Establish scaffold identity, scope and authority

Assign a scaffold ID and define its exact location, elevations, boundaries and intended trades or tasks. Record the scaffold type, system, designer or design reference where applicable, erection contractor, client area owner and competent inspector.

Describe intended loading, access points, interfaces and any special conditions in the terms used by the approved design. Do not infer capacity from appearance or from a nearby scaffold. Adapt the record to the applicable scaffold system. A tick confirms that an assigned competent person applied the proper criteria; it is not a generic declaration that every component is acceptable.

Check foundations and supporting conditions

Inspect the ground or supporting structure for the conditions anticipated by the design. Look for settlement, undermining, voids, erosion, standing water, disturbed surfaces and nearby excavation. Where the scaffold bears on an existing structure, verify that the approved support arrangement remains identifiable.

Check base plates, sole boards or system-specific foundation components against the design and supplier instructions. Do not pack or level components with improvised materials. If support has moved or its condition is uncertain, prevent access and refer the issue to authorized scaffold personnel.

Review drainage and likely changes from weather, vehicle movement or ongoing civil work. The construction site inspection checklist can coordinate surrounding observations, but the scaffold inspector must make the scaffold-specific determination.

Verify structure, bracing, ties and configuration

Compare standards, ledgers, transoms, braces, connections and system components with the approved arrangement. Look for missing, damaged, loose, incompatible or visibly altered parts. Check plumb and alignment only through approved methods and tolerances.

Inspect ties, anchors, buttresses or other stability measures for the actual configuration. Confirm that building work has not removed or obstructed them. Sheeting, netting, signage and environmental exposure may alter loads and require design review; never assume an accessory is neutral.

Record deviations by exact bay, lift and elevation. Do not diagnose structural adequacy from a photograph or authorize a field fix outside the scaffold process. Link required corrections to a controlled work record and reinspect the affected boundary after completion.

Inspect platforms and edge protection

Confirm platform units, supports, overlaps, gaps and restraints match the system and design. Look for damage, contamination, displacement and unauthorized substitution. Keep the intended use and loading visible to users.

Housekeeping matters because loose materials, trailing equipment and accumulated debris can obscure defects or create additional hazards. Material storage must remain within approved areas and loading. A clear platform does not compensate for a structural deviation.

Assess access, egress and user interfaces

Verify that ladders, stair towers, gates, landings and openings match the approved access arrangement and remain secured and unobstructed. Check transitions between the scaffold and structure. Users should not need to climb braces or cross unprotected gaps.

Consider rescue and emergency egress under the site’s work-at-height plan. The checklist can confirm that arrangements were reviewed but cannot design or validate a rescue system. Qualified owners must account for the actual location, workforce and response capability.

Control defects, tags and access

When a defect or unknown condition is found, define the affected scaffold boundary and prevent unintended access according to site controls. Do not rely on a note buried in an inspection record. Use physical controls, tags and communication as required by the approved system.

Describe the observation precisely and identify the bay, lift, component and evidence. Assign correction only to authorized scaffold personnel. Other trades must not move components, even when the change appears minor or restores access.
