Google Meet Companion Mode is a second-screen way to join a meeting, designed mainly for people sitting together in a conference room. The room hardware carries the microphone, speakers, and main camera, while each person can use a laptop to chat, raise a hand, respond to polls, use Q&A, present, or access other supported controls without creating a howl of audio feedback.
It is not a lighter version of a normal remote join, a recording mode, or a way to bypass Workspace permissions. It solves a specific hybrid-meeting problem: several people share one room audio system, but each still needs an individual digital presence.
How Companion Mode works
In a conventional hybrid meeting, everyone in the room appears as one conference-room tile. Remote participants can chat and raise hands individually, while people in the room may have to speak through the room system or pass one control panel around. Companion Mode adds a personal connection from each laptop without making every laptop play and recapture the same audio.
Google’s official Companion Mode guide describes it as a route for hybrid collaboration and second-screen use. The precise feature set depends on the Workspace edition and administrator configuration, so treat the controls visible in your meeting as authoritative.
When to use it
Use Companion Mode when several attendees share a Meet-enabled room, one person needs to present from a laptop while room hardware handles sound, or in-room participants need individual chat, Q&A, polls, or hand raising. It is also useful as a second screen: keep the presentation on one display and participant video or chat on another.
Do not use it as your only connection when working remotely and needing normal microphone and speaker behavior. In that situation, join with full audio and video. How to join with Companion Mode
Open the calendar invitation or meeting link on the laptop. On the pre-join screen, choose Use Companion Mode rather than the standard join option. Google also documents g.co/companion as a direct entry route. Select the meeting, request admission if required, and then use the laptop’s collaboration controls.
If the room supports Google’s proximity features and the administrator enables them, Meet may detect the room and offer a room connection or check-in. Google’s current proximity-detection guidance says this relies on microphone permission and ultrasonic signals, has device requirements, and can fail when certain audio enhancements filter frequencies. Manual check-in remains available when detection does not work.
Audio, camera, and feedback behavior
The companion device is not intended to be another loudspeaker and microphone in the same room. Let the room hardware carry sound. If one laptop joins normally with its speakers active beside the room system, it can create echo, feedback, or duplicate audio. Mute or disconnect the accidental full join, then re-enter correctly.
Camera behavior has evolved, and some room-connection experiences can preserve a chosen camera state. Do not promise colleagues that Companion Mode always means an invisible tile. Inspect the pre-join preview and the meeting’s People panel. Tell participants which room and device represent them, especially when attendance records matter.
Features available in Companion Mode
Typical uses include in-meeting chat, hand raising, presenting, captions, polls, Q&A, and host controls when the account and role permit them. Room check-in can associate a person with the physical room, improving how names and hand raises appear to remote attendees. Google says availability varies by Workspace edition.
Companion Mode does not grant features that the account lacks. It cannot turn a participant into a host, make recording available on an ineligible plan, or unlock restricted polls. For recording eligibility, use why Google Meet recording may be unavailable and Google Meet recording.
Participant limits and guest admission
Google says Companion Mode connections count toward the meeting’s participant limit. A person connected through room hardware and Companion Mode may therefore consume more than one connection. Presentations can also count. For a large event close to its cap, test the expected room configuration instead of counting only human attendees.
Guests who are not signed in may need host approval. Organisational access rules, waiting-room behavior, and host management still apply. Companion Mode is a user interface choice, not an identity or admission shortcut.
Presenting from a companion device
A companion laptop is well suited to screen sharing because the presenter can control slides locally while room hardware handles audio. Join through Companion Mode, choose the presentation control, and share only the intended tab, window, or screen. Google’s g.co/present route can connect directly for presenting.
Before a high-stakes session, close private messages, disable pop-up notifications, open all files, and test embedded media. Assign a colleague to watch remote chat and raised hands. Afterward, turn decisions into an explicit meeting follow-up rather than treating the chat log as the final record.
Room check-in and Connect room
Room check-in tells Meet which physical room a Companion Mode participant occupies. Newer supported Meet hardware can use proximity detection to suggest the room. Google’s Connect room documentation says an administrator must enable the relevant setting and that the workflow joins the laptop through Companion Mode while room hardware joins the meeting.
This is convenient, but it is not necessary for basic Companion Mode. If detection fails, confirm browser microphone permission, supported hardware, and audio-enhancement settings, or check in manually. Organisations should also assess whether ultrasonic detection is suitable for their rooms.
Recording, transcription, and consent
Companion Mode itself does not create a recording. If the meeting is recorded, transcribed, or processed by an AI note feature, the normal account, role, notice, and legal requirements apply. A room check-in or interface message should not replace a clear human explanation of purpose, access, and retention.

Troubleshooting common problems
If you cannot hear the meeting, remember that room hardware or a full join should provide audio. If feedback starts, find the laptop joined with live speakers and microphone. If Companion Mode is missing, use a supported browser and verify that the meeting and organisation permit it. If room detection fails, check microphone permission and disable audio processing that may filter ultrasonic signals.
If a poll, Q&A, recording, or host control is absent, verify the Workspace edition and role. If attendance looks duplicated, check the People panel for both room and companion connections. Run a rehearsal using the actual room, hardware, guest identities, and expected number of connections.
A practical hybrid-room checklist
Choose one room audio path. Ask in-room attendees to use Companion Mode rather than normal joins. Check everyone into the room where supported. Name a remote-participant advocate, test presentation audio, and explain recording status before the meeting begins. Keep the invitation link available in case proximity detection fails.
Companion Mode works best when treated as collaboration infrastructure, not a novelty. It gives every person an individual way to participate while preserving one controlled room sound path. That creates better hybrid etiquette without pretending the laptop is the room microphone.
