An audio-activated recorder starts or resumes when sound crosses a detection threshold and pauses when the input becomes quiet. That can shorten files and remove long silence, but it can also record irrelevant noises, clip opening words and miss quiet speakers. For an important meeting, interview or evidentiary source, continuous recording is usually the safer default.

How sound activation actually works
The recorder continuously monitors the microphone input. When the measured level exceeds its threshold, it records; when sound stays below the threshold for the configured interval, it pauses. Manufacturers use names such as VOR, VCVA, voice activation or sound activation.
Sony’s official VOR documentation describes automatic start when input reaches a predefined level and pause when it falls below that level. This is level detection, not reliable understanding of whether a human said something important.
The key tradeoff: silence versus completeness
Removing silence makes playback faster and can produce smaller recordings. It is useful for personal reminders, intermittent equipment sounds or low-stakes dictation where a missed beginning is recoverable.
The cost is uncertainty. The recorder cannot know that a soft “no” matters more than a closing door. If completeness is important, use continuous capture and remove silence later. False triggers are normal
Air conditioning, chair movement, traffic, keyboard taps and handling noise can exceed the threshold. Higher sensitivity captures quieter speech but creates more false starts; lower sensitivity reduces nuisance capture but risks missing distant or soft voices.
Test in the actual room. Place the recorder where speakers are similarly distant, run the ventilation and reproduce normal movement. Do not evaluate only by whispering next to the microphone in a quiet shop. Sony explicitly notes that VOR is affected by ambient conditions and recommends turning it off for an important recording if results are unsatisfactory.
Opening words can be clipped
Sound detection, wake-up and file writing introduce delay. Some products maintain a pre-record buffer; others do not, and buffer duration can vary. Without enough buffered audio, the first syllable or word may disappear. Slow initial speech does not solve missed quiet words consistently.
Run ten realistic trials: silence, a normal opening sentence, a soft reply and overlapping speech. Inspect the waveform and listen to every beginning. A marketing label such as “voice activated” does not establish startup performance.
Sensitivity and pause controls matter
Prefer a recorder with adjustable microphone sensitivity and, where available, threshold or release-time control. A short release time can split one thought into many fragments; a long release time records more silence. Scene presets are convenient but should not replace a trial.

Privacy risk does not disappear during silence
An activated recorder still monitors sound and may start on private speech outside the intended event. Never leave it concealed or unattended to “catch” conversations. Before recording people, explain the purpose, access and retention, then obtain explicit agreement. If anyone declines, provide a fully equal no-recording/manual-notes alternative.

Choose formats and transfer controls
MP3 reduces file size; WAV can preserve more audio detail at a higher storage cost. Choose based on the required source quality and downstream tools, not a blanket claim that one is always best. Confirm timestamp behavior across automatic pauses and whether a resumed segment becomes a new file.

Test battery behavior instead of assuming savings
Voice activation may reduce written audio and playback time, but the microphone and detection logic still need power. Battery effects depend on hardware, wireless features, screen use, file format and implementation. Use the manufacturer’s stated test conditions only as a comparison starting point.
Charge fully, use your real settings and run a duration test longer than the intended session. Carry a permitted backup power route. Never rely on an untested battery estimate for a one-off interview or formal meeting.
Review and preserve context
Automatic gaps can make two statements seem adjacent even though minutes passed between them. Preserve timestamps or an event log where context matters. Listen around consequential passages and mark uncertainty rather than inventing missing words.
Activation also complicates quality assurance because an apparently clean file can hide speech that never crossed the threshold. Compare the recording with contemporaneous manual notes and ask the authorised participants to confirm important outcomes. If the file is a source for formal minutes, document that activation was used and that silence in the file does not prove silence in the room. Never present an activation-edited timeline as continuous evidence.

A practical buying rule
Buy audio activation for convenience only after testing its failure modes. Require adjustable sensitivity, understandable status, easy continuous-mode override, suitable format, sufficient storage, reliable transfer and an auditable deletion process. For critical capture, switch activation off and record continuously—with agreement—or take manual notes.
Keep the test recording and documented settings so future users can reproduce the approved configuration.
